Armoede
In een rijk land als Nederland leven nog altijd 260.000 kinderen in armoede. Ook in Leiden groeit het aantal mensen dat moeite heeft om rond te komen. Armoede beïnvloedt vrijwel alle aspecten van het leven, van gezondheid en wonen tot opleiding en sociale relaties, en gaat vaak gepaard met schaamte, stress en uitsluiting. Toch wordt er vaak óver mensen in armoede gesproken, en minder vaak mét hen. Met Arm! willen we ruimte maken voor de échte verhalen en samen komen overgaan tot oplossingen. Met een team van theatermensen en activisten die weten hoe het is om arm te zijn en die zich hebben verdiept in de systemen die voor armoede zorgen, organiseren we dit festival. Aan het einde van de avond zullen we hopelijk dichterbij een oplossing komen!
Programma
Het festival staat dit jaar in het teken van de performance HORECA van artist in residence Zsófi Rebeka Kozma. In haar voorstelling onderzoekt zij de arbeidsomstandigheden in de Nederlandse horeca en de rol van migrantenarbeid. Voor dit nieuwe onderzoek stelt zij zichzelf de vraag: wat zou er gebeuren als zij als Hongaar naar Nederland zou verhuizen en werk moest vinden zonder Nederlands te spreken? Samen met horecamedewerkers in Leiden, onderzoekers en activisten brengt ze de vaak onzichtbare structuren achter arbeid en ongelijkheid in kaart.
Voorafgaand aan de voorstelling nemen we het publiek op performatieve wijze mee in de vraag: wat is arbeidsuitbuiting in Nederland eigenlijk? Waar vindt het plaats, en hoe kan het dat het in een rijk land blijft bestaan? Na de voorstelling gaan we in een workshop-setting met het publiek verder. Samen ontwikkelen we praktische tools: hoe herken je arbeidsuitbuiting, hoe kun je je ertegen beschermen, wat kun je zelf doen en waar kunnen we het systeem zo buigen dat uitbuiting minder ruimte krijgt?
Poverty
In a wealthy country like the Netherlands, 260,000 children are still living in poverty. In Leiden too, the number of people struggling to make ends meet is increasing. Poverty affects nearly every aspect of life, from health and housing to education and social relationships, and is often accompanied by shame, stress, and exclusion. Yet people tend to talk about those living in poverty more often than with them. With Arm!, we aim to create space for real stories and come together to move toward solutions. With a team of theatre makers and activists who know what it’s like to be poor and who have studied the systems that cause poverty, we are organizing this festival. By the end of the evening, we hope to be closer to a solution!
Program
This year, the festival centers around the performance HORECA by artist-in-residence Zsófi Rebeka Kozma. In her work, she examines working conditions in the Dutch hospitality sector and the role of migrant labor. For this new research, she asks herself: what would happen if she, as a Hungarian, moved to the Netherlands and had to find work without speaking Dutch? Together with hospitality workers in Leiden, researchers, and activists, she maps the often invisible structures behind labor and inequality.
Before the performance, we engage the audience in a performative exploration of the question: what does labor exploitation in the Netherlands actually mean? Where does it take place, and how is it possible that it persists in a wealthy country? After the performance, we continue in a workshop setting with the audience. Together, we develop practical tools: how to recognize labor exploitation, how to protect yourself against it, what you can do personally, and how we can reshape the system to leave less room for exploitation.
